Then perhaps I’d be offended that you think I have nothing to tell.

“Ffunny Ffriends” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra

This band knows how to take the ’60s sound and spin it on its head. Sure, there’s the hazy Beatles-esque vocals and psychedelic guitars, complete with sliding solos and soft, moving sexy beats, but the bass line brings Ffunny into the present. Last year, we had Avi Buffalo. This year, it’s time to rock out and roll the windows down. Get out of the acoustic, folky, sissy-fied slum and check out Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Album Review: It’s All True by Junior Boys

I really wanted to love this entire album, but I don’t. The album’s premier single “ep” will have you dancing like none other, and some other tracks fit the mold, but… others are really crappy love-making music that go on for about three minutes longer than you want them to. If 80s disco music is your thing, some tracks are going to make you wet, but others will have you wishing you hadn’t gotten into “Playtime” to begin with. Fun music that will compliment an already strong electronicy set… but only a few songs are going to actually make one.

“Red Dress” by Pictora

This CD arrived to WKNC with a label recommending it to listeners of Sleigh Bells, so of course I was intrigued. After my first listen, I definitely disagree with the comparison; Pictora is loud, but it isn’t hard. This isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy the album, though.

From the start of Red Dress, a heavy bass beat provides backing to pretty straight forward lyrics. There aren’t any harsh sounds here, and though there is a very full sound, there’s no distortion or grating noises. The synthy melodic line at about a minute in reminds me of the cuteness of YACHT. Pictora is best described as CSS crossed with M.I.A. It’s a wonderful summer beat, and I look forward to hearing a full LP sometime in the future!

“True Loves” by Hooray for Earth

This band is about to explode. It’s phenomenally good and catchy. It’s the perfect blend of sound, and you’re going to find yourself trying to sort through its influences as you listen. The chorus adds counter-harmonies that are reminiscent of Why?, but the band throws in glitchiness that will remind you more of PVT or maybe Akron/ Family’s most recent S/TH II album. The background is pleasantly grating sometimes and throws in uncomfortable screeching frequencies. I found myself thinking back to Sufjan Stevens’ The Age of Adz and Rafter’s Quiet Storm. This music bends itself to make you think. The carefully recorded imperfections are what makes it wonderful.

This isn’t to say Hooray for Earth’s “True Loves” is inaccessible. The vocals are very poppy and compatible with the main-stream, adding an intriguing contrast to the complex and volatile musical mountain behind them. This band drips of delicious irony: it is slow yet fast, there is a deep-bass backing to each song juxtaposed against a cheery lead singer, and simple lyrics cancel out an intricate instrumentation.

The band is currently touring the United States with Architecture in Helsinki, but I have a feeling that they will be the ultimate stars, outshining each concert’s headliner. This is a band to watch, no doubt.

“Blackeye” by Love Inks

I swear that this trend of bizarre-o music videos is unintentional, though it would appear to be a good predictor of amazing music. In this track off of Love Inks’ most recent album, E.S.P., the gorgeous husband-wife duo and their guitarist produce lo-fi yet full sounds reminiscent of Warpaint. Sherry LeBlanc’s vocals are quite nice and this song will have you floating on air.

“Twinkl Sr” by Mane Mane

This is the first video I have ever seen that uses the “skinnyscreen” format. I really dig it, but I don’t think it’s going to catch on as anything more than a gimmick. It works quite well with this spacious song filled with space-like blip blurp clash clods. Just get lost in it and try not to surface for a few minutes. Everybody needs to do that every once in a while. Also, do I hear Rebecca Black being sampled in there?! I know I don’t, but

“Ungirthed” by Purity Ring (video NSFW)

Heavy and glitchy synths are scattered against the luscious voice of Megan James in what is my favorite discovery of this week. It’s chill, it’s intense, it’s harsh, it’s soft, and it’s this perfect contrast that has me on the edge of my seat waiting for a full LP from Purity Ring. This shows great potential.
